Technology has democratized the art of photography, but delivering a successful Instagram post still remains a two-part science. Many of us don’t have the time, or the skills, to craft the caption that will launch our photos over the 100-like mark, but there’s a new savior in town. Captional Gains is a group of copywriters and advertisers who will create custom one-liners and blurbs for your Instagram photos, for free.

If you struggle with caption anxiety or are simply looking to enhance the quality of your Instagram posts, you can upload your photo to captionalgains.com and receive 10 captions that frankly, “don’t suck.” The team will write in whatever tone you’d like, whether you’re going for the witty one-liner or want to stay true to your serious self.

While interning at an agency in San Francisco, copywriters Patrick DeYoung andChamsseddine Abdelhafidh noticed a lull spot in the Instagram world. Abdelhafidh told PSFK:

We all have friends who post photos regularly with one worded captions, or no caption at all. The photos are cool sometimes but I noticed that usually when the caption isn’t interesting the number of likes doesn’t follow.

With more than 75 million Instagram users flooding the digital world, it can be hard to distinguish your posts from the crowd. Whether you’re looking to get more likes, or to simply unlock the creative beauty, humor, or emotion within your photos, a caption can do wonders. But when words are slacking or missing, the Instagram experience is not as good as it can be.

After a few days of brainstorming, the writers reached out to art director Belén M. Márquez and started the caption writing service. DeYoung explains the value they hope to bring to the social media market:

In an ideal world, I would scroll down my feed and find every single post “worthy” of a like. That certainly isn’t the case right now. I think our service is for anyone who feels like their captions aren’t doing their pictures justice. Everyone’s phones these days can capture gorgeous photos, and those images deserve a well-crafted caption.

Amongst social media users and brands alike, maintaining authenticity is usually a top priority. In this regard, Captional Gains makes us question whether outsourcing caption writing can be socially acceptable? DeYoung says, of course it can.

Our goal is to improve the overall quality of the posts that the average user sees when scrolling down their feed. Yes, you’re going to get more likes using our service, but people don’t like posts for no reason.

Through a social sharing economy, Captional Gains is enhancing the quality of people’s Instagram feeds—ultimately improving the experiences of Instagram posters, and consumers alike. Whether it expands to other social platforms is yet to be determined, but for now the team is focused on producing quality content for people who need it.
